What Is BGP and Why Does Your Hosting Provider Talk About It?

BGP explained in plain English: how the internet routes traffic between autonomous systems, why multi-homing and blended bandwidth matter, and when you need your own AS.

If you have shopped for serious hosting, you have probably seen providers boast about “BGP”, “multiple upstreams”, or “a blended network”. These are not marketing noise — they describe how your traffic actually reaches the rest of the internet, and they have real consequences for performance and reliability. Here is a plain-English explanation.

The Internet Is a Network of Networks

The internet is made up of tens of thousands of independent networks called autonomous systems (AS), each identified by an AS number. Your hosting provider is one AS; the networks that carry your traffic onward are others. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is the language these networks use to tell each other which IP ranges they can reach and how.

When you load a website, your packets hop from network to network until they arrive. BGP is what decides each hop. It is, in effect, the routing system of the entire internet.

Why Your Provider’s BGP Setup Matters

Two providers can sit in the same building and still deliver very different experiences, because of how they connect to the rest of the world:

  • Number of upstreams. A provider with several transit providers has multiple independent paths to the internet. If one upstream has an outage or congestion, traffic can shift to another.
  • Peering. Direct interconnections with other networks (often at internet exchanges) can shorten the path to common destinations, lowering latency and cost.
  • Route quality. A well-run network chooses good paths and reacts quickly when one degrades. A poorly run one can leave you on a congested route.

Single-Homed vs Multi-Homed

A network with only one upstream is single-homed: if that one connection fails, everything behind it goes dark. A multi-homed network speaks BGP with two or more upstreams, so the loss of any single provider does not take it offline. For anything you care about staying reachable, multi-homing is a baseline expectation.

What “Blended Bandwidth” Means

When a provider advertises “blended” bandwidth, it means your traffic is intelligently distributed across several upstream carriers rather than locked to one. The routing picks among them based on path quality and cost. The benefit is resilience and generally better path selection than a single carrier could offer alone.

BGP and DDoS Mitigation

BGP also underpins much of DDoS defense. On-demand scrubbing works by announcing your routes through a mitigation provider during an attack, so traffic is diverted, cleaned, and returned. Null-routing (blackholing) a targeted IP during a severe attack is also a BGP action. Understanding this helps explain why network design and attack defense are tightly linked.

Do You Need Your Own BGP?

Most customers do not run BGP themselves — they rely on the provider’s network. But if you want provider independence (the ability to move your IPs between providers), or you are large enough to multi-home across data centers, you can get your own AS number and IP allocation and announce them via BGP. That is a bigger commitment, but it gives you control over your own routing.
