NODED.CLOUD/Network/Looking Glass

Looking glass — ping, traceroute and MTR.

Test our network before you order. Run ping, traceroute or MTR from our VPS locations to any public IP address or hostname and see the latency and route your users will get. Free, no account needed. More about the network on our network page.

01 · Run a test

Pick a location, enter a target.

Tests run on our own servers in the location you pick and take a few seconds; traceroute and MTR can take up to 45 seconds. The output is the raw tool output, so you can paste it into a ticket.

What each test tells you.

Latency from a looking glass is the network path from our location to your target. Port speeds, DDoS protection and IP options are on the network page.

Ping

Five ICMP echo requests. Read the average round-trip time for latency and the loss percentage for reliability — a few milliseconds of jitter is normal, steady loss is not.

Traceroute

Every router between our server and your target, up to 30 hops. A * on one hop usually means that router does not answer probes, not that traffic stops there.

MTR

Traceroute and ping combined over 10 cycles, with loss and latency per hop. Loss that starts at one hop and continues to the end of the path points at that hop; loss on a single middle hop alone is usually rate limiting.

IPv4 and IPv6

Enter an IP address or a hostname. Locations that have IPv6 show an IPv6 switch; on Auto a hostname is tested over IPv4 when it has an IPv4 address.

Q.01
What is a looking glass?
A looking glass is a public tool that runs network tests from a provider's servers instead of from your own computer. It shows the latency and the route between our location and any address on the internet, which tells you what your users will see before you order a server.
Q.02
Where do the tests run from?
From the servers that host our VPS in each location listed in the tool. The list is live: a location appears only while one of its servers can run tests, and drops out during maintenance until it is back.
Q.03
Which addresses can I test?
Any public IPv4 or IPv6 address, or a hostname that resolves to one. Private, reserved and internal addresses (for example 10.0.0.0/8, 192.168.0.0/16 or localhost) are refused, and hops inside private networks are shown as [private] in the output.
Q.04
Is there a limit?
Yes — a few tests per minute and a fixed number per hour for each visitor, plus a per-target limit so the tool cannot be pointed at one address from every location at once. Each test is short: five pings, a 30-hop traceroute or 10 MTR cycles.
Q.05
How do I test the route from my network to yours?
Click "Test to my IP" to see the path from our server back to you. For the other direction, run ping, traceroute or mtr on your own machine against a server you have with us; the looking glass cannot run tests from your network.

Happy with the latency? Deploy where it is lowest.
